Hösten 1963 utkom Katarina Taikons debutbok Zigenerska. Hon var 31 år, hade nyligen lärt sig läsa och skriva och blev över en natt talesperson för romernas kamp för lika rättigheter i Sverige. Tillsammans med andra aktivister och kulturpersonligheter kämpade hon för att tömma tältlägren som romer bodde i och för deras rätt till skolgång. Hennes krav på inkludering väckte starka reaktioner, både på grund av ren fientlighet mot romer men även utifrån en idé om att romer varken kunde eller ville leva inom det moderna samhällets ramar. Katarina Taikons livsprojekt blev att utmana den synen. Katarina Taikon (1932–1995) föddes i ett tält utanför Örebro. Hon är mest känd för sin självbiografiska barnboksserieom Katitzi.
