Harmajan kuvaukset nuoruuden maailmantuskasta, rakkaudesta sekä kuolemasta puhuttelevat yhä uusia lukijapolvia. Runoilija Saima Harmaja (1913–1937) kuoli vain 23-vuotiaana, mutta ehti julkaista peräti kolme runokokoelmaa. Neljäs runokokoelma "Kaukainen maa" julkaistiin postuumisti Harmajan kuolinvuonna. Harmajan vahvat runot käsittelevät erityisesti kuolemaa, rakkautta ja luontoa. Häntä on usein verrattu Edith Södergraniin, eikä suotta – olihan Södergran yksi Harmajan esikuvista.
