'I have been glued to Asako Yuzuki's new novel Butter’ NIGEL SLATER
The cult Japanese bestseller about a female gourmet cook and serial killer and the journalist intent on cracking her case, inspired by a true story, and translated by Polly Barton.
There are two things that I can simply not tolerate: feminists and margarine.
Gourmet cook Manako Kajii sits in Tokyo Detention Centre convicted of the serial murders of lonely businessmen, who she is said to have seduced with her delicious home cooking. The case has captured the nation’s imagination but Kajii refuses to speak with the press, entertaining no visitors. That is, until journalist Rika Machida writes a letter asking for her recipe for beef stew and Kajii can’t resist writing back.
Rika, the only woman in her news office, works late each night, rarely cooking more than ramen. As the visits unfold between her and the steely Kajii, they are closer to a masterclass in food than journalistic research. Rika hopes this gastronomic exchange will help her soften Kajii but it seems that she might be the one changing. With each meal she eats, something is awakening in her body, might she and Kaji have more in common than she once thought?
Inspired by the real case of the convicted con woman and serial killer, "The Konkatsu Killer", Asako Yuzuki’s Butter is a vivid, unsettling exploration of misogyny, obsession, romance and the transgressive pleasures of food in Japan.

This is amazing. It really defies explanation but I found it had a lot to say for itself and was incredibly profound. Read this book if you are interested in feminism, the expectations of gender and finding meaning. I'd call this book a modern classic.

Absolutely brilliant! Listening to this, read wonderfully by Hanako Footman, alongside reading the book, really helped to bring it alive. I was invested in the case from start to finish, and the descriptions of food was so gorgeous that I would be salivating and starving as I read. A truly wonderful mix of murder and food, and I cannot wait to recommend this book to everyone I know.

Maybe not for everyone, but I devoured it! The narrator was so easy to listen to, I struggled with some of the characters Japanese names at first, and I was really intrigued by some of the values of the characters, which seemed unusual to me (from the UK). It made me think quite deeply about what society expects from us as a woman, what it is to enjoy pleasure, internalised fatphobia and beauty standard, the discrepancies between how we see ourselves vs how others see us. I felt like the story lost some steam towards the end, but it’s still one of the most enjoyable books I’ve listened to this year (out of about 40 so far)

I think if it wasn't for the narration I probably wouldn't have persisted with this book. It's just super long and there doesn't seem to be a beginning, middle or end. It just talks. Really good description about food but this definitely could have been cut down
