Geboren wurde er am 29.11.1898 als Clive Staples Lewis in Belfast. 1917 begann er - als Atheist mit Interesse für heidnische Mythen - ein Studium in Oxford, wo er 1925 Dozent für englische Sprache und Literatur wurde. 1926 machte er dort eine der wichtigsten Bekanntschaften seines Lebens: Er lernte J.R.R. Tolkien kennen. Tolkien legte den Grundstein dafür, dass Lewis sich Anfang der dreißiger Jahre nur noch zum Christentum bekennen konnte - "schachmatt" gesetzt, wie er selbst es nannte, nachdem er sowohl vor seinen Emotionen als auch von den Verstandsargumenten seiner Freunde und Bekannten kapituliert hatte. Die christliche Komponente durchzieht Lewis' Werk auch da, wo es nicht unbedingt zu vermuten wäre: Die sieben "Chroniken von Narnia" (ab 1950), eine Märchenreihe, die auf Geschichten gründet, die Lewis und sein Bruder sich als Kinder ausgedacht haben, vertreten christliche Grundwerte und thematisieren Verrat und Erlösung durch ein Opfer so unaufdringlich, dass es fast schon hinter die Geschichte zurücktritt, aber dennoch präsent bleibt. C.S. Lewis starb am 22.11.1963 in seinem Haus "The Kilns" in England.
