De Avonden (dat als ondertitel 'een winterverhaal' meekreeg) beschrijft de laatste tien dagen van 1946 vanuit de beleving van de kantoorklerk Frits van Egters. Het boek was als manuscript al bekroond met de Reina Prinsen Geerligsprijs. Ook nu nog heeft dit relaas van een kleinburgerlijk, zeer benauwend bestaan zonder enige illusie en zonder wezenlijk menselijk contact, niets van zijn beklemming verloren. De naargeestigheid van het boek schokte destijds vele critici. Er werd zelfs gesproken van 'mensonterend proza'. Godfried Bomans besprak de roman in 'Elsevier' onder de kop 'Een schrikbarend boek'. Hij had, zo schreef hij, 'zelden een boek gelezen zo naargeestig, zo zeer van iedere positiviteit verstoken, zo grauw, cynisch en volstrekt negatief.'
