Tolstoi oli huomattava yhteiskunnallinen ja uskonnollinen ajattelija. Hän opiskeli yliopistossa itämaisia kieliä ja oli muutenkin kielellisesti hyvin lahjakas – hän puhui venäjän lisäksi ranskaa, kreikkaa, italiaa, englantia ja saksaa. Kirjoittamisen lisäksi Tolstoille tärkeää oli köyhien auttaminen.
