In this unforgettable portrait of human frailty and resilience, Kristin Hannah reveals the indomitable character of the modern American pioneer and the spirit of a vanishing Alaska-a place of incomparable beauty and danger. The Great Alone is a daring, beautiful, stay-up-all-night story about love and loss, the fight for survival, and the wildness that lives in both man and nature.
‘A woman has to be tough as steel up here. You can’t count on anyone to save you and your children. You have to be willing to save yourselves’
Thirteen-year-old Leni is coming of age in a tumultuous time. Caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, she dares to hope that Alaska will lead to a better future for her family, and a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if it means following him into the unknown.
As Leni grows up in the shadow of her parents’ increasingly volatile marriage, she meets Matthew. And Matthew – thoughtful, kind, and brave – makes her believe in the possibility of a better life.

This is the third Kristin Hannah book that I have read. Beautiful story, loved the relationship between Lenny and Cora. Learnt so much about Alaska and the resilience of the people that call it home. Going to reflect on it before I start my next Kirsten Hannah book 😊

Hannah takes you to times and places unknown and paints images with words so vivid it’s like you are there. Her portrayal of women & motherhood are a thread that runs through her books and a perspective I very much enjoy and relate to.

Just wow! I don’t know how she does it but another absolute masterpiece from Kristin Hannah. I finished the book more knowledgable about the topics covered and emotionally spent (in a good way!) Just brilliant

I would have listened to this on one go if I didn't have other commitments! Loved the story and the setting in wild Alaska. If I had to critique one thing it would be the male voices by the narrator, I found them a little irritating. But it didn't affect the overall enjoyment of the book.
